1. When a computer draws a line that isn't vertical or horizontal, it can appear jagged due to the line actually being made up of hundreds of little boxes/squares/pixels. What anti-aliasing does is give some of the surrounding pixels a slightly different shade of color that the line itself so that it appears a little bit smoother to the naked human eye

for example in the following link which is a screenshoit from doom 3, look at the tank on the left, you'll notice the edge has a jagged appearance to it because anit-aliasing has been turned off.

this next link is from farcry and has AA turned on, notice how the angled sections appear to be much smoother

2. Refresh rate is basically how fast your monitor tries to redraw the image on your screen, a decent explanation can be found on wikipedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refresh_rate

3. AA and Refresh rate can both impact the lag on your screen, more so for AA than refresh rate. Your interface size will have little impact though.

I know in my cases i can go from 50 FPS to 80 FPS graphics wise if i turn off vertical sync. You may want to try it, if you are after better frames per second. I don't lag near as much as i used too.

Disabling Vertical Sync can get you a gain in FPS. Some video cards may suffer quality issues from disabling it, your mileage may vary, give it a try..

Think of Vertical Sync as a speed limit, it's "safe" but it can slow you down.

It won't blow up your video card if you turn it off.
